EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Lakers have finalized a two-year contract extension with head coach JJ Redick, securing his position through the 2029-30 NBA season, general manager Rob Pelinka confirmed Thursday during the club’s annual preseason press conference.
Redick, 41, signed a four-year agreement last summer but is now under contract for five additional seasons at approximately $45 million, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The extension arrives after Redick guided Los Angeles to 50 wins and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference during his first year on the sideline.
“This makes it clear JJ Redick is the coach, not just now, but moving forward for the long term,” Charania reported, noting that the deal positions the former NBA sharpshooter to steer the franchise well beyond the LeBron James era.
Pelinka declined to discuss financial specifics but emphasized organizational alignment. “We’re committed to stability and a shared vision,” he said, referencing the team’s new core built around superstar Luka Doncic.
Focus on Conditioning
Redick said he challenged players to arrive in “championship shape” and has been encouraged by offseason participation. “We’ve asked all our guys to be in championship shape — and not starting on Tuesday,” Redick told reporters. “The commitment level across the board has been very high. The guys have played pickup almost every day, and we’ve added conditioning at the end. That’s probably been the biggest thing.”
The Lakers open training camp next week at the UCLA Health Training Center.
