The Los Angeles Lakers will open the 2026 NBA Playoffs against the Houston Rockets after locking up the No. 4 spot in the Western Conference with a 53-29 record.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven series is set for Saturday, April 18, at 5:30 p.m. PT on ABC.

How the matchup was set

Los Angeles secured the fourth seed by defeating the Utah Jazz on the final night of the regular season and benefiting from the Denver Nuggets’ win over the San Antonio Spurs. A Nuggets loss would have moved the Lakers to No. 3 and paired them with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Regular-season results

The Lakers took the season series from Houston, 2-1, claiming both victories after the All-Star break. The Rockets routed Los Angeles by 23 on Christmas Day in the only meeting the Lakers dropped.

Key absences and storylines

Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves remain sidelined, leaving LeBron James and the rest of the roster to compensate for the loss of two primary playmakers. Dončić spearheaded both wins over Houston, heightening the challenge for Los Angeles.

Houston prefers a slower, physical style, while the Lakers expect every player aside from Dončić and Reaves to be available. The series will also reunite Kevin Durant and James in the postseason for the first time since 2018.

Smart’s return

Guard Marcus Smart, who rejoined the lineup late in the season, called the upcoming test “exciting,” noting that outside expectations make the Lakers’ collective effort even more critical.

The winner of the series advances to the Western Conference semifinals.
