Los Angeles — Veteran forward Kevin Love believes longtime friend LeBron James will likely retire after the 2026-27 NBA campaign, not at the end of the current season.
Speaking with Fox Sports reporter Melissa Rohlin, Love said he doubts the 40-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star will call it quits this summer, but sees “a high likelihood” of James stepping away after one additional year. “It’s coming sooner rather than later, and he’s been pretty outspoken about that,” Love noted.
Historic 23rd Season
James returned to the court this month after missing the first 14 games with right-side sciatica, marking the first time in his career he skipped the start of a season. His appearance set an NBA record, making him the first player to compete in 23 separate seasons.
While James recovered, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves guided Los Angeles to a 10-4 start. Upon rejoining the lineup, the four-time champion focused on rebounding and defensive leadership, seamlessly fitting into head coach JJ Redick’s rotation.
Chasing a Fifth Title
James has repeatedly stated his pursuit of a fifth championship. Team performance over the next two seasons could influence the timing of his retirement, especially with Doncic positioned as the franchise’s long-term cornerstone.
Redick said James was “all good” physically after his debut, adding that the Lakers will gradually ramp up the veteran’s workload as he regains full game shape.
