The Los Angeles Lakers have dismissed executives Joey Buss and Jesse Buss from their front office roles, the brothers confirmed on Nov. 20, 2025.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the move is part of a reorganization of the club’s basketball operations department and is effective immediately. Both brothers are younger siblings of Lakers governor Jeanie Buss, who is expected to remain in that position for at least five years after the Buss family agreed to sell its majority stake to Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter.
Joey and Jesse Buss released a joint statement through Charania, saying they were “extremely honored” to serve the organization for two decades and expressing regret over how their tenure ended. “At times like this we wish we could ask our Dad what he would think about it all,” the statement added, referring to late Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss.
While their employment has ended, the two will retain their minority ownership shares in the franchise.
For the past decade, the Buss brothers have led the Lakers’ scouting efforts, helping identify players such as Austin Reaves, Kyle Kuzma, Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr. and Max Christie. Most recently, Joey Buss held titles of alternate governor and vice president of research and development, while Jesse Buss served as assistant general manager.
The organization has not yet announced who will fill the vacated positions.
Earlier this year, the brothers launched a sports acquisition venture, a project they are now expected to pursue full-time.
