JJ Redick Warns Lakers to Expect Every Opponent’s Best Effort

LOS ANGELES — Head coach JJ Redick conceded Thursday that every team on the Los Angeles Lakers’ schedule treats the matchup as a showcase, a reality that has intensified the club’s recent struggles.

The admission came after an embarrassing defeat to the Charlotte Hornets, a game in which the Lakers surrendered a 34-16 second-quarter run and ultimately dropped their eighth contest in the last 13 outings. Despite the skid, Los Angeles still holds the Western Conference’s fifth seed, though a gap is widening between the Lakers and the conference’s top four teams.

“I think in general these guys grew up watching LeBron James play,” Redick said. “The Lakers, like the Celtics, are the most storied franchises in all of sports … We don’t get a lot of off nights from other teams in terms of energy and being up.”

Defense Remains the Central Problem

Charlotte exploited Los Angeles’ perimeter defense throughout the night, repeatedly generating uncontested looks after the first quarter. Redick cited both schematic breakdowns and the Hornets’ shot-making as decisive factors.

The Lakers’ inability to quell opponents’ scoring spurts has become a pattern. Against Charlotte, offensive rhythm vanished alongside defensive connectivity, underscoring a larger trend the first-year coach has yet to solve.

Roster Questions Loom

Internal fixes are scarce, and league observers believe Los Angeles may need to acquire at least two reliable 3-and-D players before the trade deadline. Until then, Redick must search for solutions within a rotation that has shown diminishing resistance against younger, more athletic lineups.

The Lakers return to action seeking a quick course correction to regain momentum and maintain a path toward home-court advantage in the postseason.
