EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said he is “grateful” for the organization’s confidence after signing a two-year contract extension this offseason.

Speaking at the UCLA Health Training Center on Sept. 25, 2025, Redick thanked governor Jeanie Buss, vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka, and CEO/president Mark Walter for the new deal. “It just starts with a high level of gratitude to the Lakers, to Mark, Jeanie and Rob to have that confidence in me,” Redick told reporters. “It’s not lost on me, this sort of rarity of a first-time head coach getting an extension.”

The agreement follows Redick’s first campaign on the Lakers bench, a season marked by lineup changes and a first-round playoff exit to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games. Despite postseason shortcomings, Pelinka opted to maintain continuity, offering Redick a longer runway to build the program.

Redick, 41, joined Los Angeles last summer after the club dismissed Darvin Ham, another first-time coach. A 15-year NBA veteran and former broadcaster, Redick has been praised internally for his communication skills and understanding of today’s game.

During the press conference, Redick also reiterated his offseason message to players about arriving in “championship shape” after the roster struggled with Minnesota’s physicality and heavy minutes during the playoffs.

The extension makes Redick the fourth full-time head coach employed by the Lakers since Pelinka assumed the general manager role in 2017.
