Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick called for greater uniformity in NBA officiating and in the league’s challenge procedures following a 103-88 defeat to the LA Clippers on December 20, 2025, at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
The Lakers entered the game short-handed and lost Luka Doncic to a leg contusion at halftime, but Redick said inconsistent calls compounded the team’s problems. “The consistency needs to be addressed, and it will be,” he told reporters. “We need to know what it is night to night.”
Redick added that he routinely submits feedback to the league yet has “never” received a response. He said discrepancies in how different officiating crews handle challenges have become a recurring issue, despite guidance from the NBA’s replay center.
A key flashpoint came when Redick attempted to challenge a ruling on a ball that went out of bounds after apparent contact on a box-out. Crew chief Josh Tiven warned him the sequence might be considered “two separate plays,” which would nullify the challenge. Redick disagreed, noting that similar sequences have been deemed reviewable in prior games. “It’s not two separate plays,” he said. “That’s an insane definition.”
The Lakers rank among the league’s leaders in fouls drawn, and Redick contended that the team should not be penalized for that style of play. He plans to raise his concerns with the NBA in hopes of establishing clearer guidelines.
