Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick expressed frustration over what he views as excessive criticism of LeBron James after the 41-year-old forward delivered another standout performance in his 23rd NBA season.
Speaking following the Lakers’ recent win against the Atlanta Hawks, Redick highlighted James’ 31-point, 10-assist, nine-rebound effort, which came in just 33 minutes and on the second night of a back-to-back — the first time James had played on consecutive nights this season.
‘Uncharted territory’
“We’re in uncharted territory,” Redick said, noting that James immediately sought treatment after taking a hit to the quad in the fourth quarter. “He’s going to do everything he possibly can to play in his 23rd year. His competitive stamina is off the charts.”
Redick added that team staff initially did not expect James to suit up, given the workload on a 41-year-old body. “He just said, ‘I’m going to try,’” the coach recalled. “He and Luka Doncic completely led the group tonight. It was evident — 22 assists between them.”
Frustration with outside commentary
The first-year coach labeled ongoing negative narratives about James “unfortunate,” emphasizing how much preparation the NBA’s all-time leading scorer commits daily. “It’s crazy the way certain people talk about him,” Redick said. “Come be around him every day and see how much this guy cares.”
According to Redick, the motivation behind harsh commentary is simple: “That’s the nature of envy… You’ve got to say something bad about him to get a click, to get a response.”
James, who has openly acknowledged that his career is nearing its end, continues to pace the Lakers while redefining expectations for longevity in the league.
