Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick spent part of the 2025 offseason meeting with Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay and seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady to refine his approach for the upcoming NBA season.
Speaking Monday at the club’s annual preseason press conference in El Segundo, California, Redick said the sessions focused on coaching philosophy and roster-specific strategy. “The job as a coach is to figure out what’s best for the group,” he told reporters. “A lot of that comes from self-assessment and conversations with people like Sean McVay and Tom Brady.”
Building on a Successful Debut
Redick, hired last summer with no prior coaching experience, guided Los Angeles to the Western Conference’s third-best record in 2024-25. The run included major in-season roster changes that required a midcourse adjustment in playing style.
“It’s really about continued growth for myself and my staff,” Redick said, noting that he also spent two days in Chicago recently exchanging ideas with several NBA coaches.
Long-Standing Connection to McVay
Redick and McVay have known each other for several years through former Rams offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth. “We wanted to get together prior to last year,” Redick explained, “but moving and getting the kids in school made it tough. I feel lucky I finally got to do that.”
Looking Ahead to 2025-26
The 41-year-old coach did not commit to an opening-night starting lineup, citing multiple viable combinations. “We have a lot of options,” he said, adding that decisions will be made closer to the regular-season opener.
