Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick called LeBron James “remarkable” on Monday while reflecting on the forward’s sustained excellence as his 41st birthday approaches on Tuesday.
Speaking after practice, the 41-year-old coach contrasted his own physical condition with that of James, the NBA’s oldest active player. “I have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, and I’ve got to get an injection in my knee,” Redick said. “He’s 41 to me already, and what he’s doing is remarkable.”
James, who has long been most effective with the ball in his hands, has recently deferred to Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. With Reaves sidelined, the four-time MVP has resumed a primary role and, according to Redick, remains committed to filling any gap created by injuries.
Adjusting the Offense
Redick credited James’ willingness to alter his playing style to fit the coaching staff’s plans, which early in the season emphasized running the offense through Anthony Davis. “It doesn’t happen overnight, but he embraced playing a little less pick-and-roll, a little less isolation,” Redick explained. “We have daily conversations—Is this working? Is this not working?—even during games.”
The coach highlighted James’ effectiveness as a screener, in the post and at the elbow, noting that off-ball actions create advantages the veteran can exploit with his strength and skill. “When he has that shoulder or foot advantage, he can really make plays,” Redick said.
Looking Ahead
Los Angeles relies on James to maintain that versatility while the rest of the roster looks to provide consistent support. James appears ready for the challenge, entering Tuesday’s milestone in strong form.
In a related Christmas Day meeting, Kevin Durant expressed gratitude for continuing to face James, remarking on the rarity of two long-time stars still sharing the court at this stage of their careers.
