EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said Monday that his roster met his offseason demand to arrive in “championship shape,” citing daily pickup games and added conditioning sessions that ran throughout the summer.
Speaking at the UCLA Health Training Center on Sept. 25, 2025, Redick explained that he asked players to reach peak fitness before training camp opened. “We’ve asked all our guys to be in championship shape, and not starting on Tuesday,” he told reporters. “The commitment level across the board from our team has been very high this summer.”
According to Redick, organized workouts were held almost every day, capped by conditioning drills. “It’s not a basketball thing that he can or cannot do,” the coach said. “It’s just all of us being in elite shape.”
Redick, entering his second season on the Lakers bench and his first full year coaching Luka Doncic, added that conditioning is only one part of the standard he is setting. “We’re gonna ask guys to be in championship shape, have championship communication, and championship habits,” he said. “That’s a daily commitment. Our guys this summer have been awesome. I know LeBron is always committed to those things, Luka has been committed.”
The Lakers finished third in the Western Conference last season but fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games in the first round. With Doncic now established as the team’s primary star, Redick said the goal is to build habits that carry deep into the postseason.
General manager Rob Pelinka underscored the organization’s confidence in Redick, announcing during the same press conference that the franchise has signed the coach to a contract extension. Specific terms were not disclosed.
