Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said forward Rui Hachimura is entering the 2025-26 season with noticeably greater confidence and enthusiasm.
“What I’ve seen just in the last few weeks is a higher level of confidence,” Redick told reporters during a recent press conference. “Rui is playing with a lot of confidence, he’s carrying himself with a lot of confidence and has been an absolute pleasure to coach.”
Hachimura, 28, is in the final year of his contract and is eligible for an extension. Since arriving in Los Angeles, the former No. 9 overall pick has emerged as one of the league’s most efficient three-point shooters while maintaining a steady mid-post game. His offensive touches are expected to fluctuate this season with LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves sharing ball-handling duties.
Competition for a Starting Role
The 6-foot-8 forward will likely battle newcomer Marcus Smart in training camp to keep his spot in the opening lineup. Hachimura offers size and floor spacing, but Smart adds perimeter defense the Lakers may need alongside James, Reaves and Doncic. Redick indicated Hachimura’s ability to defend and collect five to six rebounds per game could be decisive in that competition.
Contract Status Remains Unclear
General manager Rob Pelinka declined to address whether extension talks with Hachimura have taken place, saying he would not discuss ongoing negotiations. The lack of public movement underscores the high-stakes nature of the season for several Lakers on expiring deals.
Hachimura averaged 13.6 points and 4.2 rebounds last season while shooting 41.9 percent from beyond the arc. Whether he begins games or comes off the bench, Redick said the forward’s growing confidence should translate into consistent production.
