The Los Angeles Lakers slipped to .500 in January after Thursday night’s 112-101 loss to the L.A. Clippers, a result that pushed the team to 6-6 for the month and into the Western Conference’s No. 6 spot, virtually tied with the Phoenix Suns for seventh. Head coach JJ Redick said post-game that a lack of offensive cohesion was at the heart of the defeat.
“We just didn’t trust each other on offense,” Redick told Spectrum SportsNet. “Not enough passing. That’s a consistent thing when we don’t play well.”
Offensive Struggles Continue
Luka Doncic and LeBron James were the only Lakers to score at least 20 points, combining for 55 on 20-for-46 shooting. No other Laker reached 13 points. A key stretch came in the final 3:03 of the first half, when Los Angeles managed only two points while the Clippers added nine.
Redick said breakdowns occurred at both ends, but he emphasized ball movement. “There’s gotta be a trust factor with all our guys, just to trust the pass,” he noted. “That starts with Luka—he’s going to have the ball the most. He’s got two on him, he’s playing in a crowd; he’s gotta pass the ball.”
Impact of Contract Uncertainty
Asked whether looming trade-deadline decisions and numerous expiring contracts might be affecting chemistry, Redick cited the “human element.” “Guys are worried about their futures,” he said. “I’ve been there—you can get in your head a little bit: ‘I’ve played five minutes, haven’t got a shot yet.’ It’s natural.”
Keeping Ayton Involved
The coach also reiterated the need to feature Deandre Ayton more consistently, an issue that has surfaced in recent weeks. Ayton has expressed frustration with his touches, and Redick acknowledged the center’s concerns, saying the Lakers must ensure he stays active within the offense.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday at Ball Arena against the Denver Nuggets, looking to regain offensive rhythm and protect their position in the crowded Western Conference standings.
