LOS ANGELES — Lakers head coach JJ Redick believes newly signed center Deandre Ayton is quickly demonstrating he belongs on a championship contender.
“He’s showing that he’s a winning basketball player,” Redick said after Monday’s practice, pointing to Ayton’s two-way influence through the opening stretch of the 2025-26 season.
Strong start after discounted signing
Los Angeles added Ayton over the summer on a team-friendly deal following his buyout from the Portland Trail Blazers. The move filled a need for a starting center alongside Luka Doncic.
Through eight games, the 7-footer is averaging 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting 65.7% from the field. Redick praised Ayton’s willingness to screen, defend and “sacrifice” for teammates.
Chemistry with Doncic and Reaves
A pick-and-roll connection with Doncic is developing, but Ayton’s partnership with Austin Reaves has flourished. Reaves has repeatedly found Ayton on short-roll opportunities, where the former No. 1 pick’s free-throw-line jumper has become a reliable option.
Defensive presence
Redick highlighted Ayton’s rim protection, citing late-game help-side blocks that sealed recent wins. “He was a big part of our fourth-quarter defense,” the coach said.
Feeling the spotlight
Ayton admitted he felt extra pressure when the back-to-back World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers attended a recent victory over the San Antonio Spurs, whose defense ranked second at the time. The Lakers prevailed behind a dominant fourth quarter at both ends.
Ayton and the Lakers continue a four-game homestand Wednesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
