Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick credited LeBron James for willingly scaling back his offensive workload during Thursday night’s game against the Chicago Bulls, the forward’s first contest after missing three straight outings.

While James sat, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves delivered some of their most productive stretches, prompting questions about whether the four-time champion still elevated Los Angeles’ ceiling. Aware of that conversation, James focused on screening, cutting and pocket play rather than dominating the ball in his return.

“I thought he was great tonight,” Redick said. “He’s been the No. 1 option his whole career, but he wants to win and he’ll do whatever it takes, even if it looks different. He understands Luka and AR need time on the ball, so he sacrificed.”

James finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Redick highlighted the veteran’s off-ball movement and willingness to crash the glass as examples of a shift designed to keep Doncic and Reaves in rhythm.

The 41-year-old’s adaptability has become a talking point within the organization. Redick said the two recently discussed redefining James’ responsibilities to preserve his energy and maximize the team’s extensive firepower.

“LeBron wants to do everything possible to help this team win,” the coach added. “It speaks to how much he cares about his teammates.”

James has repeatedly stated he can tailor his game to whatever the Lakers require, an approach Redick believes will be essential as Los Angeles pushes toward the postseason.
