Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said his team failed to carry out most of its after-timeout sets during Friday night’s meeting with the Memphis Grizzlies, calling the miscues “frustrating” after reviewing game film on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, the second-year coach explained that the Lakers ran 12 designed plays following timeouts against Memphis and botched eight of them. “We tried to run two of them again and still didn’t run them correctly,” Redick said. “One we tried to run a third time, [and] didn’t run that correctly.”
Redick stressed that the actions were not new concepts. “The only time we ever really run an ATO for the first time is the first play,” he noted, adding that the squad has had more than 30 games to internalize the playbook.
The Lakers have struggled to find consistency on both ends of the court. The club ranks last in bench scoring, has battled defensive lapses, and has dealt with a revolving cast caused by injuries, leaving lineups that lack on-court chemistry.
Minutes for Dalton Knecht
To spark the second unit, Redick inserted second-year forward Dalton Knecht into the rotation against Memphis. The coach said he is less concerned with Knecht’s scoring and more interested in seeing the 24-year-old provide energy and effort whenever he is on the floor.
The Lakers continue a four-game homestand this week as Redick looks for sharper execution and improved depth production.
