Miami, FL — A seemingly curious sight outside Kaseya Center on the night the Los Angeles Lakers faced the Miami Heat has been clarified by the artist involved. LeBron James was photographed walking into the arena carrying a vinyl copy of J. Cole’s unreleased album The Fall Off, sparking online speculation that the four-time NBA champion was staging a public moment.

During an appearance on the 7pm in Brooklyn podcast hosted by Carmelo Anthony, J. Cole revealed the real reason for the record. The rapper said he attended the Jan. —that night’s— game and asked James if he would meet his children, noting that his eldest son considers the Lakers star his basketball hero.

“I hit Bron and he graciously said he would do it,” Cole told Anthony. “On his way, he had The Fall Off vinyl so I could sign it. This bro was doing me a solid.” Cole added that watching his kids meet “a superhero” was a “crazy feeling” and thanked James for the gesture.

The exchange counters social-media claims that James was simply looking for attention. Instead, the forward was bringing the album for Cole’s autograph before greeting the rapper’s children.

James went on to help the Lakers secure a victory that night, extending what became a nine-game winning streak before it was snapped later in the road trip. After the stretch ended, the 39-year-old veteran praised his team for its mental toughness.
