Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic appeared prominently in the NBA’s annual general manager survey released ahead of the 2025-26 season, collecting votes in several key categories.

Projected MVP Race

GMs placed Doncic second in the race for the 2025-26 Kia Most Valuable Player award. Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić led the projection with 67 percent of the vote, while Doncic received 10 percent. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (8 percent) and San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (7 percent) followed.

Game-Planning Impact

After topping the list a year ago, Doncic finished fourth among players who force opposing coaches to make the most adjustments. Jokić again led that category at 57 percent, followed by Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (17 percent) and Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (13 percent). Doncic garnered 10 percent, while Gilgeous-Alexander took 3 percent.

Positional Versatility

GMs differed on Doncic’s primary position but ranked him near the top at three spots:

  • Best Point Guard: 2nd (17 percent), behind Gilgeous-Alexander (73 percent)
  • Best Shooting Guard: T-3rd (7 percent), trailing Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards (70 percent) and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell (13 percent)
  • Best Small Forward: 1st (40 percent), ahead of Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum (20 percent) and Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant (17 percent). Lakers teammate LeBron James tied for fourth at 7 percent.

Across all position questions, Doncic captured 12.7 percent of total votes, the fifth-highest share in the league.

Passing and Clutch Recognition

General managers ranked the 26-year-old second to Jokić (80 percent) in the “best passer” category, giving Doncic 10 percent. He also placed fourth (10 percent) among players GMs would choose to take a game-winning shot, following Curry (47 percent), Durant (17 percent), and Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton (13 percent).

Doncic enters his first full season with Los Angeles after an offseason focused on conditioning and a standout showing at FIBA EuroBasket 2025. The survey results reinforce expectations that the four-time All-NBA selection will be a central figure in the upcoming campaign.
