Turkish forward Furkan Korkmaz believes the basketball world will fully appreciate Luka Doncic a decade from now, calling the Los Angeles Lakers star “a different guy” with unique skills and mindset.
Speaking to FIBA Basketball, Korkmaz, 28, reflected on facing Doncic both in the NBA and international play. “Maybe in 10 years we can say: ‘Yeah, I played against him. He was this good or that good. We were lucky to have watched him,’” he said.
Doncic Preparing for Redemption Season
Doncic, 26, joined the Lakers last season after a mid-year trade from the Dallas Mavericks and recently signed a contract extension that positions him as the franchise’s next cornerstone. The guard is using this summer’s EuroBasket to sharpen his form; despite Slovenia’s uneven exhibition results, he has impressed observers with his conditioning and production.
In 28 regular-season games with Los Angeles, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists while shooting 43.8% from the field and 37.9% from three-point range. Those numbers came after a calf injury limited his preparation and fitness.
Lakers Eye Improved Chemistry
Lakers assistant coach Greg St. Jean said the upcoming training camp will focus on strengthening the connection between Doncic and LeBron James. The staff believes extended practice time will help the two elite playmakers maximize an upgraded roster as Los Angeles targets a deeper postseason run in 2025-26.
With Korkmaz forecasting long-term admiration for Doncic’s career, the Lakers are counting on the four-time All-NBA guard to fulfill that vision—and push the franchise toward its next era of success.
