MIAMI — Since returning from injury on March 12, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James has led the club to eight straight victories, convincing some observers that the 41-year-old can still carry a contender deep into his 23rd NBA season.
After James recorded a triple-double in a March 19 matchup against his former team, the Miami Heat, Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra praised the veteran’s longevity and work ethic.
“You just have to absolutely respect his level of competitive spirit,” Spoelstra said. “He’s competing against not only the entire league, but he’s competing against Father Time. He’s giving Father Time hell, he really is, and you have to respect that.”
Spoelstra noted that James’ off-court regimen—weight training, mobility work, shooting drills and player-development sessions—has been visible since the pair first worked together 14 years ago with Team USA.
Milestone Approaching
When the Lakers visit the Orlando Magic on Saturday, James is set to pass Robert Parish for the most regular-season games played in league history. The pending mark adds to a résumé that already includes four championships and four MVP awards.
Efficient March Run
In eight March appearances, James is averaging 20.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 63.1 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from three-point range. His redefined role, featuring selective scoring bursts and increased defensive focus, has boosted the Lakers at both ends of the floor.
Responding to Doubt
During James’ recent absence, the backcourt pairing of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves sparked discussion about whether Los Angeles might function better without the league’s all-time leading scorer. James addressed those claims after returning, reminding critics that his versatility allows him to adapt to any lineup configuration.
The Lakers will look to extend their winning streak to nine when they face Orlando, with James chasing yet another record while continuing, as Spoelstra put it, to challenge the calendar.
