Luka Doncic credited new back-court partner Marcus Smart for sparking the Los Angeles Lakers on both ends of the floor after the team’s recent comeback victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
“First of all, it’s the energy on the defensive end. He does some things I’ve never seen in my life, like how he dives for the ball,” Doncic said postgame. “Then it’s his leadership and his communication on defense. It’s been everything for us.”
Smart joined the Lakers as their final free-agent addition after securing a buyout from the Washington Wizards. Although the guard missed time during training camp and the preseason, head coach JJ Redick has quickly incorporated the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year into a prominent role. Smart now serves as a vocal leader alongside established stars LeBron James and Doncic.
Against San Antonio, the veteran guard helped ignite Los Angeles’ rally despite a late miscue he later accepted blame for. His hustle has already become a nightly staple, whether by drawing charges, poking passes loose, or matching up with bigger opponents.
Smart acknowledged earlier in the season that he does not need eye-catching numbers to impact the Lakers, who run their offense primarily through James, Doncic, and Austin Reaves.
The nine-year veteran’s aggressive style can occasionally lead to rushed shots or risky gambles, but teammates and coaches have embraced the trade-off, citing the edge and toughness he provides the roster.
