The Los Angeles Lakers recorded a much-needed statement win on Sunday, March 8, 2026, defeating the New York Knicks from start to finish at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Guard Luka Doncic poured in 35 points, yet he pointed to the team’s defensive performance as the deciding factor.

The Lakers limited one of the league’s highest-scoring offenses to 97 points on 43 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers. “Everybody was really locked in, especially on the defensive end,” Doncic said postgame. “To hold a team like the New York Knicks under 100 is pretty amazing for us.”

Defensive Focus Paying Off

Los Angeles has struggled defensively for much of the season, but recent games have shown improvement. “We talked about it during the season that we need to be a better defensive team, and we’ve shown we can do it,” Doncic explained. “We told on ourselves, so we gotta keep doing that.”

The win pushed the Lakers to five victories in their last six outings, moving them to within one game of the Western Conference’s No. 3 seed. “It’s a pretty awesome win,” Doncic noted, referencing New York’s recent 40-point rout of Denver. “It gives us a lot of confidence moving forward.”

Leading the League in Charges

Part of the Lakers’ defensive identity has been drawing charges. The club leads the NBA in that category, and Doncic has contributed 12 charges taken, sixth-most in the league. “Just trying to copy Marcus [Smart] and AR [Austin Reaves],” he said, acknowledging Smart’s 16 charges (third) and Reaves’ 14 (fifth).

Los Angeles faces a tougher schedule in the coming weeks, but Sunday’s performance reinforced the belief inside the locker room that defense can carry the team through the stretch run.
