Los Angeles Lakers center Deandre Ayton said he is prepared to hold himself and his teammates responsible for tightening the club’s defense, stressing that improved communication and consistency are essential as the roster continues to shuffle.
“It’s really just communication and accountability out there,” Ayton told reporters, noting that the Lakers are “still trying to get to know each other” because of nightly lineup changes. “We have to stick to these principles no matter what.”
Since arriving from the Portland Trail Blazers, the former No. 1 overall pick has been asked by head coach JJ Redick to focus on rebounding and rim protection, roles the club lacked after trading Anthony Davis last season. Ayton, 5 for Los Angeles, called himself a “safety valve” on offense but acknowledged the defense remains a work in progress.
The 7-footer said he plans to lead by example, “finishing my role the right way” and demonstrating the second-effort plays he expects from others. He added that holding stars such as LeBron James and Luka Doncic accountable requires understanding “personnel” and offering constructive criticism the right way.
Injuries have complicated that process. On Saturday, the Lakers announced guard Austin Reaves will miss at least four weeks with a grade 2 calf strain after averaging 26 points per game. Ayton said the team must collectively absorb that scoring loss while remaining “hard” on its defensive principles.
The Lakers last played on Nov. 14, 2025, when Ayton grabbed a rebound against the New Orleans Pelicans at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
