Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James described himself as “more comfortable” on the court after logging 24 minutes in the team’s preseason opener against the Phoenix Suns, even though his shots rarely fell.
The second-year guard, wearing No. 9, finished 1-for-12 from the field and 1-for-8 from three-point range in Friday night’s game at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, California. He posted eight points, five rebounds and two assists in the 108-103 loss.
“I felt like I was more comfortable, especially with the ball in my hand and within the defensive and offensive schemes,” the 20-year-old said afterward. “I’m still trying to feel out my role and just continue to grow during the season.”
James, drafted in the second round last year, spent much of his rookie campaign with the South Bay Lakers before joining the NBA roster late in the season. Head coach JJ Redick has not indicated whether the guard will secure a regular-season spot in the rotation, but he has emphasized focusing on process over results during preseason.
Despite the cold start, James remained upbeat about his shot selection. “I felt like they were pretty good shots—wasn’t rushed, wasn’t forcing anything,” he said. “I didn’t have my legs under me as much as I wanted to, so a lot were short, but most were on line. I think I took good shots.”
Looking ahead, James said earning minutes will depend on effort and doing what Redick calls the team’s “non-negotiables.” “There probably won’t be as many opportunities during the season,” he noted. “So just coming out, playing hard, playing my game—maybe that gives me an opportunity.”
James is expected to remain available throughout preseason as injuries and lineup experimentation could open additional chances before Opening Night.
