The Los Angeles Lakers expect LeBron James to rejoin the lineup soon after missing time with sciatica, and guard Austin Reaves believes the 40-year-old star will blend in quickly.
Speaking to reporters this week, Reaves noted that the roster is still learning to play together but predicted James’ basketball IQ will shorten the adjustment period. “We’re all figuring things out, but he studies the game so much that I’m sure he’ll make the transition look easy,” Reaves said.
The Lakers have posted strong early-season results without James, thanks largely to Luka Doncic’s production and Reaves’ All-Star-caliber start. When James returns, the rotation and individual roles are expected to shift, yet Reaves is confident the four-time MVP’s presence alone will elevate the group.
“Just having him on the floor lifts everyone,” Reaves added, calling James the greatest player he has ever seen and a longtime favorite of several younger teammates.
James demonstrated similar adaptability last season after Los Angeles traded for Doncic, moving off the ball on offense and acting as a defensive “quarterback” to direct teammates into proper positions.
Head coach JJ Redick said the responsibility for reintegrating James ultimately falls on the coaching staff, but he is counting on the veteran’s track record of adjusting his game to different rosters.
The Lakers have not announced an exact date for James’ return, but team officials expect it will be soon.
