MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards added another milestone to his fast-rising career on Thursday night, becoming the seventh player in NBA history to reach 10,000 career points before turning 25.

The 2020 No. 1 overall pick hit the mark during the Timberwolves’ matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers at Target Center. Edwards reached the plateau at a younger age than every player on the exclusive list except LeBron James and Kevin Durant. The other members of the group are Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony and Luka Dončić.

After the game, the 24-year-old acknowledged the achievement but downplayed its significance. “It’s cool, but I know I got a lot more to go, so it’s really nothing for real,” Edwards told reporters. He then joked about surpassing Bryant’s pace. “I’m kinda sick that I got it in front of Kobe. I wish I would have waited like 100 days,” he said with a smile.

Edwards has often cited Bryant as a major influence, and the reverence is mutual around the league. New York Knicks forward Julius Randle — a former teammate of both Bryant and Edwards — drew the comparison during last season’s playoffs. “He’s not scared of any moment and he wants those moments. His belief and confidence in who he is as a player is the highest I’ve ever seen or been around,” Randle said, calling Edwards’ mentality “Kobe-like.”

While Bryant collected three NBA titles before his 25th birthday, Edwards is still seeking his first championship. For now, the Timberwolves star continues to build a résumé that already puts him in rare company.
