Las Vegas, NV — Quenton M. “Marselles” Brown, father of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown, was arrested Thursday morning on an attempted-murder charge tied to a Wednesday night stabbing in a parking lot near All American Park, according to Las Vegas police.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

The 57-year-old former heavyweight boxer was booked into the Clark County Detention Center shortly after his arrest. During an initial court appearance Thursday afternoon, bail was set at $300,000. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Alleged Parking-Lot Confrontation

Investigators say the incident began when Brown’s SUV allegedly brushed against the vehicle of youth football coach Cross Tupuola. A police report states that after an exchange of words, Brown walked away, then grabbed Tupuola’s right shoulder and stabbed him several times once the coach turned his back.

Victim’s Injuries

Tupuola, 5 ft 9 in and 160 lb, sustained serious wounds, including:

  • Stab injuries to the upper right chest/clavicle area
  • A defensive hand wound that damaged tendons
  • A slice requiring a partial gastrectomy
  • Eviscerated bowels
  • A broken right rib that may need surgery

He was transported to a local hospital and is recovering after surgery.

Brown’s Condition and Legal Position

Brown, listed at 7 ft and 300 lb, was treated for a broken toe, scraped knees, and a cheek abrasion. His attorney told authorities the stabbing was an act of self-defense.

Boxing Background

Marselles Brown made his professional boxing debut in 1989 and compiled a 33-18-1 record with 25 knockouts. His last bout took place nearly ten years ago.

Relationship With Jaylen Brown

TMZ Sports reported that Jaylen Brown, a four-time NBA All-Star and 2024 Finals MVP, is not close to his father and was unaware of the arrest. Drafted third overall by Boston in 2016, the guard averaged 22.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists this season before the Celtics were eliminated by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
