Former NBA guard Sebastian Telfair asked former President Donald Trump for a pardon on Monday, a day before he is scheduled to begin a six-month sentence for violating the terms of his supervised release in a league health-care fraud case.
Speaking to TMZ Sports in New York City, the 38-year-old called the situation “definitely some bull—” and said Trump would “want to pardon me” after reviewing the details. “I did too much good to be sending anybody to jail,” he added. Telfair claimed the violation resulted from paperwork issues and described the outcome as “super unfair.”
Violation of Conditional Release
Telfair had received a suspended sentence after admitting he helped defraud the NBA’s Health and Welfare Benefit Plan through falsified medical and dental invoices. Prosecutors originally recommended 15 to 21 months in prison, but the court ordered time served and three years of supervised release that included community service and regular check-ins with U.S. Probation.
According to Sportico, Telfair failed to complete the required community service and did not report to his probation officer, triggering the six-month incarceration he must begin Tuesday.
Background of the Fraud Case
Telfair was one of 18 former NBA players charged in October 2021 with conspiring to pocket roughly $2.5 million through false benefit claims. Other defendants included 2008 NBA champion Glen “Big Baby” Davis, who was sentenced to 40 months in May 2024, and six-time All-Defensive guard Tony Allen.
High-Profile Prep Star Turned Journeyman Pro
A standout at New York City’s Abraham Lincoln High School, Telfair was drafted 13th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2004. Over a 10-year career with eight NBA teams, he appeared in 564 regular-season games (193 starts) and averaged 7.4 points, 3.5 assists and 1.6 rebounds while shooting 39.0 percent from the field.
If Trump declines to intervene, Telfair told TMZ he plans to focus on self-improvement while incarcerated. “My fans, just hold tight,” he said.
