The Boston Celtics’ August contract extension with head coach Joe Mazzulla is believed to cover six seasons, according to a Monday report from NBA insider Marc Stein.

The club previously described the agreement only as a “multi-year” deal. Stein wrote that coaching circles view the arrangement as similar in length to the six-year contract Brad Stevens accepted when he moved from the college ranks to Boston’s bench in July 2013.

Mazzulla Begins Fourth Year in Charge

Mazzulla, 37, called the new agreement “a blessing” after signing. “I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children,” he said, thanking ownership, Stevens, team staff, and his players.

The Rhode Island native has guided the Celtics to the postseason in each of his first three campaigns, culminating in the franchise’s 18th NBA championship at the end of the 2023-24 season. He became the league’s youngest head coach to win the Finals since the 1968-69 season, when 35-year-old player-coach Bill Russell led Boston to the title.

Under Mazzulla, the Celtics have recorded at least 57 victories every year.

From Assistant to Head Coach

Mazzulla joined the organization in 2019 as an assistant. He was elevated to interim head coach before the 2022-23 season after the team suspended Ime Udoka, and later received the permanent position.

Last season, he earned Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honors in March after Boston posted a 14-1 record, including an 8-0 mark on the road. The Celtics finished 61-21, claiming their 26th Atlantic Division crown and the No. 2 seed in the East behind the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Boston defeated the Orlando Magic in five games in the first round before falling to the New York Knicks in six games in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Celtics open the 2025-26 regular season at home against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.
