The New Orleans Pelicans announced Tuesday, Nov. 4, that forward Zion Williamson has suffered a Grade 1 strain in his left hamstring and will be reevaluated in approximately seven to 10 days.
The timeline rules Williamson out for upcoming games against Charlotte (Tuesday), Dallas (Wednesday), San Antonio (Saturday) and Phoenix (next Monday). Additional missed time remains possible depending on his progress.
Hamstring problems have troubled the 25-year-old in each of the past four seasons. Last year he was limited to 30 appearances because of hamstring and back issues.
Williamson played in five of New Orleans’ first six contests this season, averaging 22.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals while leading the league with 11.4 free-throw attempts per game. Despite his production, the Pelicans opened the year 0-6.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor, New Orleans owns a minus-9.0 net rating with Williamson on the floor—one of the club’s better marks—but has been outscored by 28.7 points per 100 possessions in the 136 minutes he has not played.
Head coach Willie Green addressed the team’s rough start on Monday, saying the group hoped to “turn the page” beginning with Tuesday’s matchup against the Hornets. At that point Williamson was listed as questionable with hamstring soreness.
The Pelicans called the injury mild, indicating they will handle the former No. 1 overall pick cautiously as he begins another rehabilitation process.
