The Minnesota Timberwolves will be without leading scorer Anthony Edwards for at least one week after an MRI revealed inflammation in his right knee, the club announced Tuesday.

The 24-year-old guard was already ruled out of Tuesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns because of knee soreness. Minnesota said Edwards will be re-evaluated in seven to 14 days, with updates provided as they become available.

The tentative timetable means Edwards is expected to miss at least three additional contests: Wednesday’s home meeting with Utah, Friday’s matchup against Portland, and Sunday’s road game in Boston. His next possible appearance would come no earlier than late next week, depending on medical clearance.

Edwards is posting career-best numbers in his fourth season, averaging 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals across 35.5 minutes while shooting 49.2 percent from the field, 40.2 percent from three and 79.6 percent at the line. After back-to-back All-NBA Second Team selections, he is considered a candidate for First Team honors this year but must play in at least eight of Minnesota’s final 14 games to reach the 65-game threshold for award eligibility. He has appeared in 58 games, though one does not count because he left after three minutes.

Entering Tuesday, the Timberwolves held the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference at 41-27, trailing the fourth-place Houston Rockets by half a game and leading the seventh-place Suns by two games. Edwards’ absence comes as Minnesota fights to secure a guaranteed playoff berth.
