The Minnesota Timberwolves have contacted Malik Beasley’s representatives as the 28-year-old swingman continues to explore free agency, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Minnesota joins the Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks on the list of clubs that have shown interest in recent days. Beasley remains under federal scrutiny for alleged irregularities involving gambling and prop bets, but he is no longer classified as a target in that probe. The softened legal outlook has prompted several teams to reopen dialogue about a potential deal.
Beasley previously spent two and a half seasons with the Timberwolves (2020-22), producing some of his best numbers with averages of 15.1 points per game and a 38.9% three-point rate over 130 contests. He was traded to the Utah Jazz in the 2022 offseason as part of the Rudy Gobert package.
Minnesota currently has 13 guaranteed contracts and sits roughly $5.9 million beneath the second tax apron, giving the club room to present Beasley with more than a minimum deal via the taxpayer mid-level exception if it chooses to keep the roster at 14 players.
The Pistons retain Beasley’s Non-Bird rights, allowing them to start a new contract at up to $7.2 million in the first year. Their exact level of interest is uncertain after offseason additions Caris LeVert and Duncan Robinson.
The Cavaliers and Knicks can only extend minimum-salary offers. Cleveland’s desire for another wing reportedly intensified after Max Strus underwent foot surgery.
