Washington Wizards general manager Will Dawkins said Sunday the organization still intends for Anthony Davis to play before the end of the 2023-24 campaign, despite earlier reports suggesting the forward might be shut down.
“The plan for AD right now is to go back to Dallas and finish his rehab,” Dawkins told reporters, via Bijan Todd of Monumental Sports Network. “He has a really good team down there. Our doctors met with them, and our medical staff is going to go down with him. We want to keep that going.”
Davis, sidelined by hand and groin injuries, will undergo a critical medical evaluation during the All-Star break. The results of that checkup will guide the next step in his recovery. If clearance is granted, the 30-year-old is expected to return to Washington and could make his Wizards debut later this season.
NBA insider Chris Haynes reported last week that Davis was likely to miss the remainder of the schedule, a projection later echoed by The Athletic. Dawkins’ comments indicate the team is not yet ready to rule out a 2023-24 appearance.
Looking beyond this year, Dawkins said he views Davis and Trae Young—who has not yet played for Washington—as the core of a more competitive roster next season. “AD is a special talent,” he noted. “He opens up so much offensively and has been an anchor defensively.”
Young, recovering from an undisclosed issue, will also be reevaluated during the All-Star break and is “trending in the right direction” after resuming on-court activities, according to the general manager.
