The Washington Wizards have placed veteran guard Dante Exum on waivers, the team announced today via social media.

The move was widely expected after Exum underwent season-ending surgery on his right knee in December. The 30-year-old did not appear in a game during the 2025/26 campaign because of complications from an offseason procedure that required additional surgery.

Long injury history

Selected fifth overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, Exum played all 82 games as a rookie but missed the entire 2015/16 season with a torn ACL. Shoulder, ankle and knee issues followed over the next several years, limiting his availability.

After rebuilding his stock in Europe from 2021 to 2023, the Australian guard returned to the NBA on a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. When healthy, he contributed 8.0 points, 2.8 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 19.5 minutes per contest, shooting 51.6 percent from the field, 47.2 percent from three and 76.8 percent from the foul line. However, surgeries on his right wrist and a broken left hand restricted him to 75 total appearances since the start of the 2023/24 season, including just 20 games in 2024/25.

Roster impact in Washington

Exum was one of four players the Wizards obtained from the Mavericks in the Anthony Davis blockbuster completed ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. Washington will keep his $2,296,274 cap hit on the books after he clears waivers but now has an open spot on the 15-man roster. The club currently lists 13 players on standard contracts, with guard Keshon Gilbert occupying the 14th slot on a 10-day deal.
