Washington Wizards rookie guard Tre Johnson will miss several weeks after aggravating a strained left hip flexor, head coach Brian Keefe told reporters Monday.
Keefe said the 19-year-old will be re-evaluated in two weeks but did not commit to a precise return date. Johnson first dealt with the same hip issue during his lone collegiate season at Texas and felt renewed discomfort in Friday’s game against the Toronto Raptors. He was held out of Saturday’s matchup with the Chicago Bulls.
The No. 6 overall pick is averaging 11.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 24.3 minutes through 15 games, starting four times. He is shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from three-point range but has logged under 20 minutes in each of his last three appearances.
Reporters have frequently observed Johnson wearing a protective pad on his hip while on the bench. “It shows how tough a kid this guy is,” Keefe said. “He’s been playing through some pain, but after the Toronto game, we decided to hold him out.”
With Johnson unavailable, Kyshawn George, Corey Kispert and Cam Whitmore are candidates for increased minutes in Washington’s rotation.
