Wizards’ Trades for Young and Davis Raise Hopes, but Scouts Remain Skeptical

The Washington Wizards’ rebuild took an unexpected twist after acquiring Trae Young in January and Anthony Davis in February, two moves that have already fueled postseason talk inside the locker room despite both All-Stars remaining sidelined by injuries.
“We’re already talking about the playoffs, how different it will be,” rookie Bilal Coulibaly said, adding that Young and Davis have been sharing postseason insights with teammates.
Scouts question fit and impact
While optimism is high within the organization, four NBA scouts interviewed by The Athletic expressed doubts that the pair can reverse the franchise’s fortunes. According to those scouts, Young drew limited trade interest because of his defensive problems, and concerns about Davis’ injury history kept other teams away before Washington obtained both players at reduced prices.
“Trae’s defense is of paramount concern,” one scout said. “He’s joining a team that’s already horrific defensively. And AD isn’t the same player he was three, five or seven years ago.”
Minutes restrictions and injury updates
Before Saturday’s matchup with Toronto, head coach Brian Keefe told reporters that Kyshawn George, Tristan Vukcevic and Tre Johnson were on minutes limits. George missed Thursday’s game with a knee contusion, Vukcevic is dealing with a left hip impingement, and Johnson is easing back from a sprained ankle.
Developing Tre Johnson’s playmaking
Keefe said the coaching staff is focused on expanding Johnson’s role beyond scoring. “We’re going to continue to put him in situations to grow,” Keefe explained. “When teams put two on the ball, he can find teammates with either hand. I think he’s going to be a really good creator off the dribble.”
Julian Reese signs two-way deal
Washington added front-court depth by signing forward Julian Reese to a two-way contract on Saturday. “He’s going to give us some physicality inside with his rebounding,” Keefe said. “We added some insurance underneath on the boards.”
The Wizards hope these moves, along with a healthy Young and Davis, will set the stage for a stronger 2026-27 campaign.
