The Washington Wizards have yet to initiate contract extension negotiations with guard Trae Young, according to general manager Will Dawkins.
Dawkins told Josh Robbins of The Athletic that the organization is prioritizing a clear understanding of Young’s injury status before addressing any long-term agreement. “We’re learning more about his injury status,” Dawkins said. “We’ll know more this weekend as he gets through it. Our hope is to see him with our guys so he can make a decision going into next summer as well.”
The GM emphasized that the team will not rush the four-time All-Star back onto the court. “We want him to be 100 percent healthy before he goes out there,” Dawkins added.
Young echoed that approach during his introductory press conference, saying his immediate focus is on helping Washington’s developing roster once he returns. “I just want to bring the best out of these young guys,” Young said. “When I’m able to be right and get on the court, I want to show that I can bring the best out of this team and hopefully make an All-Star or two out of some of these other guys.”
The Wizards did not provide a timetable for when contract discussions might begin.
