Newly acquired guard D’Angelo Russell is not expected to report to the Washington Wizards, general manager Will Dawkins confirmed while discussing the aftermath of last week’s multi-team deal that sent Anthony Davis elsewhere.

“We’ve been in contact with D’Angelo and his representatives,” Dawkins said, according to Sports Illustrated. “But he won’t report as we try to figure out what’s best for him and us and our future.”

The 29-year-old guard arrived in Washington on paper only and is now headed toward either a waiver or a buyout, sources around the team believe. Russell is earning $5.7 million this season and holds a player option worth nearly $6 million for 2026-27.

Washington has already released Dante Exum, another player obtained in the same transaction, signaling a continued roster reshuffle.

Russell joined the Dallas Mavericks as their primary free-agent signing last summer but averaged just over 10 points in limited minutes. His well-traveled résumé includes two stints with both the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets, along with stops at Golden State, Minnesota and Dallas.

Dawkins also addressed the arrival of guard Jaden Hardy, another former Maverick now with the Wizards. “Excited to have another young, scoring athlete,” he said, noting the team expects Hardy to see some action late in the season.

Unless an unexpected agreement is reached, Russell’s time with Washington is likely to end before it officially begins.
