The Washington Wizards said Thursday that forward Cam Whitmore will not play again this season after doctors discovered a blood clot in his right shoulder.

The team explained that Whitmore has started treatment for upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis, a condition identified on December 23. No timetable for a return was provided, but the announcement indicated only this season is affected.

Whitmore, 21, entered the league as the No. 20 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft after one year at Villanova. He spent his first two seasons with the Houston Rockets, averaging 10.8 points in 17.4 minutes while shooting .449 from the field, .357 from three-point range and .707 at the free-throw line.

Houston traded the 6-foot-7 wing to Washington last summer for two second-round picks. In 21 appearances with the Wizards, Whitmore posted 9.2 points per game on .456/.286/.742 shooting splits.

The Wizards did not suggest the clot would threaten Whitmore’s career. Other current players — including Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Ingram and Ausar Thompson — have returned to action after similar diagnoses.

Salary-cap analyst Yossi Gozlan noted that teams have until January 15 to request a disabled player exception. If Washington applies, the exception related to Whitmore would be valued at $1,769,880, equal to half of his 2025-26 salary.
