The Washington Wizards announced on December 23, 2025, that forward Cam Whitmore will be out indefinitely after doctors detected an upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) in his right shoulder. ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the diagnosis, which the team later confirmed in a statement saying Whitmore’s recovery will be monitored and his status updated when appropriate.
Whitmore, 21, has not appeared in a game since December 4. He received four consecutive coach’s decisions before being listed with right-shoulder soreness for the next two contests. Additional testing on that sore shoulder revealed the clot, according to Charania.
A one-and-done standout at Villanova in 2022-23, Whitmore entered the 2023 NBA Draft as a projected top-five pick but dropped to No. 20, where the Houston Rockets selected him. Over two seasons in Houston, he averaged 10.8 points in 17.4 minutes, shooting 44.9 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from three, and 70.7 percent at the line.
Houston sent Whitmore to Washington during the 2025 offseason for two second-round picks. Through 21 games with the Wizards, he was contributing 9.2 points per game while shooting 45.6 percent overall, 28.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 74.2 percent at the stripe.
Whitmore’s absence follows earlier benchings that head coach Brian Keefe initially attributed to unmet team standards. Keefe later clarified that the move was intended to create opportunities for other players, and reports indicated Whitmore had recently begun working closely with Keefe on his development.
Though his progress is on hold, similar clot diagnoses have not ended the careers of current NBA players such as Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Ingram, and Ausar Thompson.
