Washington’s slim mathematical hopes for a postseason berth ended with Thursday night’s loss, formally ruling the Wizards out of playoff contention.
The defeat extends a historic slide that began at the start of the 2023/24 campaign. Since opening night of that season, the Wizards own an NBA-worst 49-181 record, a .213 winning percentage. Utah is the next-closest club over the same span at 68-163 (.294).
Despite three consecutive years at the bottom of the standings, team decision-makers have signaled they do not intend to repeat that level of futility in 2026/27. This season the franchise leveraged its cap flexibility to gamble on two multiple-time All-Stars. Guard Trae Young, acquired on a buy-low deal, has delivered solid production in limited minutes. Forward/center Anthony Davis, obtained in a separate move, remains sidelined while recovering from ligament damage in his left hand.
How aggressively Washington will attack the upcoming offseason—both in free agency and on the trade market—now becomes the primary storyline. The front office must decide how to construct a competitive roster around Young, Davis and the club’s younger pieces, as well as determine which holdover players are considered part of the long-term core.
