The Cleveland Cavaliers shook up the NBA trade deadline Tuesday, agreeing to ship guard Darius Garland and a 2026 second-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for former MVP James Harden, according to people familiar with the negotiations.

After winning 64 games last season and finishing first in offensive rating, Cleveland has slipped to eighth in that category and is mired in a crowded Eastern Conference race. Team officials cited recurring toe problems that have limited Garland since last spring—issues that surgery and rehabilitation failed to solve—as a key reason for pursuing a fresh backcourt formula.
Garland’s efficiency has declined across the board, and the Cavaliers have been outscored during his minutes. To stay afloat, Donovan Mitchell has logged heavier minutes and a larger offensive load than at any point since his Utah Jazz tenure, raising concerns about fatigue ahead of the postseason.
What Harden Brings
Harden, 36, remains a high-level producer who can score, draw fouls and create shots for teammates. Cleveland envisions the 10-time All-Star as a second offensive engine capable of easing Mitchell’s responsibilities. Coaches plan to stagger the two playmakers—similar to the way Harden and Chris Paul were deployed in Houston—so that at least one primary creator is on the floor at all times.
The Cavaliers also believe Harden’s 6-5 frame and strength will reduce the defensive vulnerabilities that existed with the smaller Garland-Mitchell pairing.
