ESPN reporter Tim Bontemps identified three Western Conference teams whose 2024-25 outlooks hinge on unresolved roster issues and health questions.
San Antonio Spurs
Center Victor Wembanyama is already regarded as a transformative defender, yet the franchise’s next step remains unclear. Bontemps pointed to the new guard trio of De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, none of whom have established consistent perimeter shooting. First-year head coach Mitch Johnson inherits the task of blending that backcourt with the 7-foot-4 cornerstone. Because of the fit concerns, Bontemps considers the under on San Antonio’s projected win total the safer play.
Dallas Mavericks
Bontemps labeled Dallas “one of the league’s most fascinating storylines.” The roster now features top prospect Cooper Flagg, numerous big-lineup possibilities, and the ongoing repercussions of last season’s Luka Doncic trade. Kyrie Irving is also working back from a torn ACL. At the moment, D’Angelo Russell stands as the lone reliable ball-handler—though Bontemps views him as better suited for a reserve role. Health concerns for Anthony Davis, who dealt with a groin injury before undergoing eye surgery this summer, add another layer of uncertainty. With those variables, Bontemps doubts the Mavericks can surpass 44 wins.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Minnesota has eclipsed 51 wins only twice in its history (2004 and 2024). Last season’s run to the Western Conference finals came with just 49 regular-season victories. Bontemps noted that the free-agency loss of Nickeil Alexander-Walker shifts more responsibility to young wings Terrence Shannon Jr. and Jaylen Clark. While center Naz Reid returned on a five-year, $125 million contract, he cannot replicate Rudy Gobert’s defensive presence if Gobert misses time. Lottery pick Rob Dillingham remains an unknown behind veteran point guard Mike Conley. Despite the scoring of Anthony Edwards, the addition of Julius Randle, and head coach Chris Finch’s system, Bontemps views topping last year’s win total as difficult in a crowded conference.
