Several Western Conference storylines emerged this week, highlighted by an encouraging health update in Memphis, a challenge from Houston’s new coach, and a fresh appraisal of Minnesota’s blockbuster trade.
Memphis Grizzlies
Forward-center Jaren Jackson Jr. said his recovery from a July turf-toe procedure “is moving the right way,” adding that each day “has been a building block.” Speaking at his youth basketball camp in Memphis, the two-time All-Star noted the club will reevaluate him in late September, roughly three weeks before the Oct. 24 season opener against New Orleans. While he stopped short of guaranteeing a return by opening night, Jackson sounded upbeat: “I think everybody is going to be happy.”
The offseason has already been busy for the 24-year-old. He secured a five-year, $240 million extension, switched to jersey No. 8 in honor of his father, and reiterated his commitment to the Memphis community. Jackson averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks on nearly 49 percent shooting across 74 games last season.
Houston Rockets
First-year head coach Ime Udoka told the Houston Chronicle he wants center Alperen Sengun to “be aggressive and get back to dominating.” Sengun has followed that directive at EuroBasket, showcasing his passing and scoring while remaining efficient despite defenses keyed on him.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Nearly two years after Minnesota sent a sizable package to Utah for Rudy Gobert, The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski now characterizes the deal as a win for the Timberwolves. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year has, according to the report, reshaped the club’s culture and helped turn Minnesota into a free-agent destination rather than a cautionary tale.
