Oklahoma City, OK — Forward Jonathan Kuminga was held out of the Golden State Warriors’ game against the Thunder on Friday after experiencing low back soreness shortly before tipoff, head coach Steve Kerr told reporters. Kuminga had been cleared to play following an absence of more than two weeks, but the late setback left his availability moving forward uncertain.

Kuminga, 21, has not appeared in a game since December and will become trade-eligible on January 15. Kerr, speaking to Nick Friedell of The Athletic, said it is unclear whether the back issue will linger.

Sideline dispute revisited

Kerr also addressed last week’s heated in-game conversation with Draymond Green during an appearance on The Tom Tolbert Show on KNBR, calling the exchange “a misunderstanding that escalated.” The coach said he had called a timeout because he felt the team had lost focus, while Green thought he was being criticized for a turnover.

“I needed to be the calming force,” Kerr said, adding that he regretted not de-escalating sooner. Green left for the locker room that night but has since resumed his regular role. Kerr said the matter is settled.

Managing minutes and injuries

Following Friday’s lopsided loss in Oklahoma City, Kerr confirmed Green will play Saturday in Utah. The coach is “hopeful” Stephen Curry can also return after missing time with an ankle problem. Jimmy Butler, out with an illness, is considered day-to-day; the team does not expect an extended absence.

Monte Poole of NBC Bay Area noted that Golden State chose to rest several veterans against the Thunder rather than push them in back-to-back games. “When you have an older team, you have to navigate it,” Kerr said.

Melton on last season’s trade

Guard De’Anthony Melton, speaking to NBC Sports Bay Area, reflected on being dealt midseason last year while recovering from an ACL tear. “Honestly, I would trade me, too,” he said, citing his contract and injury status. Melton praised Kerr and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. for what he described as transparent communication during the process.

The Warriors continue to juggle health concerns, personalities and a demanding schedule as the season progresses.
