The Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs have each inquired about acquiring New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III, according to a report by Jake Fischer of The Stein Line published on August 22, 2025.
Fischer noted that Golden State, while still locked in a contract impasse with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, contacted New Orleans earlier this offseason to gauge Murphy’s availability. The Pelicans declined the approach, preferring to keep the 25-year-old after his breakout campaign.
Murphy averaged 21.2 points per game last season, up from 14.6 across his first two years. The 6’8” wing is shooting 38.3% from three-point range over his career, defends multiple positions, and has shown developing shot-creation skills.
Golden State’s interest aligns with the franchise’s emphasis on perimeter shooting. Fischer reported that the Warriors have rejected sign-and-trade proposals requiring them to move either Moses Moody or Buddy Hield, two of the club’s key long-distance threats behind Stephen Curry.
The Spurs have also “registered trade interest” in Murphy, Fischer wrote, though details of San Antonio’s overture were not disclosed. Murphy’s size and shooting would address a positional need alongside guards De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle, as well as versatile forward Jeremy Sochan.
New Orleans’ reluctance to deal Murphy is heightened by ongoing uncertainty surrounding Zion Williamson. Murphy, newly extended forward Herb Jones, and guard Jose Alvarado are among the longest-tenured Pelicans players beyond Williamson, and the organization values their continuity.
