The Golden State Warriors are rethinking their short-term plans after forward Jimmy Butler suffered an injury that could sideline him for an extended stretch, multiple outlets reported.
Sam Amick of The Athletic wrote that recent production from role players De’Anthony Melton and Al Horford had boosted internal optimism that the club might climb back into the Western Conference race if it stayed healthy. Head coach Steve Kerr had even suggested the organization’s “fading dynasty” still held a window for contention.
Butler’s absence has tempered that confidence and shifted attention to 21-year-old forward Jonathan Kuminga. According to Amick, league interest in Kuminga is currently minimal, but the injury could give him an on-court opportunity to rebuild his value.
If Kuminga returns to the rotation and performs well over the next few weeks, Golden State could gain leverage in potential trade talks, sources told Amick. The former No. 7 overall pick has previously been viewed as a candidate who might benefit from a change of scenery.
In a separate report, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints said the Warriors’ front office intends to “keep all options open” while Butler recovers. That review will include roster flexibility and, at least theoretically, an evaluation of Butler’s long-term fit with the franchise, Siegel added.
No timetable for Butler’s return was disclosed as of Tuesday.
