San Francisco — Newly acquired center Kristaps Porzingis was scratched shortly before Sunday’s tip-off against the Denver Nuggets because of an illness, forcing the Golden State Warriors into another lineup change.
Head coach Steve Kerr said he received word Sunday morning that Porzingis was “pretty sick” and remained at the team hotel. Kerr had intended to use the 7-foot-3 big man to help defend Denver star Nikola Jokic, but Porzingis joined forward Draymond Green on the inactive list.
With front-court depth depleted, guard Moses Moody continued his recent uptick in production. The third-year wing poured in 23 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out five assists. Since Jan. 1, Moody is averaging 13.1 points per game, a stretch Kerr called his “most consistent” as a professional. “He’s been brilliant for six weeks,” the coach said.
Meanwhile, two-time MVP Stephen Curry remains out with what the team has labeled runner’s knee. The Warriors said Curry will be reevaluated on March 1, leaving him sidelined for at least another week. “We all know the goal is to be healthy come play-in or playoff time,” Curry told reporters. “We just want to get in a playoff series and have a chance.”
