San Francisco — At a post-practice news conference on Thursday, guard Seth Curry said his decision to sign with the Golden State Warriors came only after he felt comfortable sharing a roster with older brother Stephen Curry.
“I wanted to build my own path in the NBA,” Seth told reporters. “Earlier in my career, playing next to Steph would have made that tough.”
Head coach Steve Kerr echoed that sentiment, noting that previous Warriors teams lacked both minutes and the right timing for the younger Curry. “Now it makes a lot of sense,” Kerr said. “I’m thrilled he’s here.”
Contract Structure
Seth Curry, 34, is on a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 agreement. He is expected to be waived before opening night and then re-signed on a prorated veteran minimum contract once the club clarifies its salary-cap position.
The 11-year veteran owns a 43.3% career three-point rate, slightly ahead of Stephen’s mark. He has suited up for nine franchises and also spent time in the G League before landing in San Francisco.
“Everyone’s excited,” he said of the family response, adding that his father, Dell Curry, “didn’t want me to leave Charlotte.”
Aging Starting Five
Golden State is on track to become the NBA’s first team to start four players aged 35 or older: Al Horford, 39; Stephen Curry, 37; Jimmy Butler, 36; and Draymond Green, 35. Reserves Gary Payton II and Buddy Hield will each turn 33 during the season.
“We don’t want to be scrambling for a playoff spot again,” Stephen Curry said, recalling last year’s late-season push that flowed straight into a seven-game first-round series.
Injury Updates
Butler missed practice on Friday and Saturday with a rolled ankle and is questionable for Sunday’s preseason opener, according to Kerr. Rookie forward Trayce Jackson-Davis is also questionable with a taped right thumb.
Rotation Watch
Second-year guard Brandin Podziemski worked with the starters on Thursday, but Kerr said no lineup decisions have been finalized.
The Warriors open preseason play Sunday at Chase Center.
