Golden State began training camp on Monday without restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, leaving one of the club’s key offseason questions unanswered. Star veterans Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and newcomer Jimmy Butler each addressed the contract standoff during media day at Chase Center.
“You acknowledge what’s going on and don’t make it bigger than it is,” Curry said, noting the team respects Kuminga’s negotiations and expects the forward to be “locked in” once an agreement is reached.
Green predicted the situation will be forgotten if Kuminga signs soon and “plays great in 2025-26.” Butler added that the roster’s leaders are focused on welcoming new faces while Kuminga’s talks continue.
Horford agreement delayed
The Warriors have lined up a multiyear contract for veteran center Al Horford, but league sources indicated the signing will occur only after Kuminga’s free agency is resolved to preserve cap flexibility. Because the deal is not yet official, Horford did not attend media day, though several players expressed enthusiasm about the future addition without naming him.
Green targets 10th All-Defensive selection
Green, already a nine-time member of the NBA’s All-Defensive teams, told reporters his “motivation” this season is to join the exclusive group of players with at least 10 selections. Only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Scottie Pippen have reached that plateau.
Podziemski cleared after surgeries
Guard Brandin Podziemski underwent wrist and core procedures in the spring but resumed on-court work Aug. 1. ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported that the second-year guard received full clearance for basketball activities “a couple weeks ago” and is not expected to miss time this fall.
Butler hosts offseason mini-camp
Butler, acquired at last season’s trade deadline, organized a team mini-camp at his San Diego home earlier this month. He said bringing teammates together in an informal setting was important for chemistry ahead of the first full season with him in the lineup.
Curry confident despite late roster moves
Curry expressed optimism about Golden State’s chances in 2025-26, citing the way the club finished last year. “We were a relevant threat before I got hurt in the second round,” the two-time MVP said, adding that the roster has improved even as final pieces continue to fall into place.
